What is the Meta Title?
When you perform a Google search, Google bots read and display the Meta title information of every query related page.
As you can see on SERPs, the clickable headline is the title of a web page.
Moz defines that a Meta title is an element of Html programming language that specifies the title of a web page.
Technically the title tag is not meta-tag it is an HTML tag that goes inside the <head> tag of the webpage.
Code sample of a title tag is
<head> <title> Webpage meta title here </title> </head>
Here <title> is the opening tag and </title> is the closing tag in the Html programming language format. And the content between these two opening & closing tags is termed as the title.
Meta titles are a mandatory segment of search engine optimization.
When the title tag is set up correctly, it can be the determining part between someone clicking on it or going elsewhere. That is why choosing a meta title precisely is essential. It should be as accurate as achievable to reflect what’s on the page.
Note: Its designation has to be simply a title or title tag. Adding meta to it is theoretically wrong. The reason is that it is not meta specification in HTML, it is a separate tag in HTML language.
However, in practice, the title is a part of the header and counted in meta-data of a web page.
Why is Meta title tag important?
Meta title defines what the content website page has, that is visible to both user and search engine bots. Search engine bots read the title from the HTML code of the webpage, and the user reads it from the search engine result page. There are three key places where the title tag is used.
1. On Search engine result page
When an individual search for any query the first thing, he/she get to know about your website is your title tag. Even if your website ranks higher, it may not get clicks if it doesn’t attract the user. So every indexable page of your website must have an SEO friendly title.
Example of title on search engine result page
As you can see in the above picture the marked text is the title that is visible to a user when they search a query.
2. In Web Browser Tabs
The title tag is also displayed at the top in your web browser tabs. It acts as a remark for who has many open browser tabs, and If your title is unique, and has a keyword in front, then it is easily recognizable.
Example of title in web browser tabs
The above picture shows an example of a title in web browser tabs. And the SEO keyword is used in the front of the title.
3. On Social Networks As retrieved links
When a user shares your page on an external website (especially on social media), then the website decides what to show other users about the link.
Example of title on Social networks as retrieved links
Here is an example of Facebook which shows some text as title and description about your page. Sometimes the text is shown along with an image.
Have one thing in mind some social media websites have their specific title tags to be inserted in the website code, like twitter meta tags. You can identify that title using twitter meta cards.
The above explained the key places that make your website title as a relevant factor. If you use a poorly formatted title for your website, firstly it will not rank on the first page of Google even if you get there, you may not get sufficient clicks.
Technical Consideration of the title tag
As being a part of on-page SEO, the meta title tag has technical consideration. You should learn those technical guidelines when writing an optimal title tag
1. Length of the title tag
The average or ideal length of a title tag is 50 to 60 characters, and the absolute length of a title tag is 65 characters. If you use more than 65 characters in your title tag then most search engines will cut off the extra length than 65 characters. It doesn’t mean that your title tag will not rank in the search engine, but the search snippet will become less attractive.
As per the Backlinko’s study, the title tag which has 15 to 40 characters, has the highest CTR.
2. Uniqueness of the title
Title tag is one of the important factors that tells crawler bot about the page content, so every page must have its unique title. Titles with the same content look like copies of each other and may compromise with the rankings.
3. Natural language
When you write a title tag, you must use the natural speaking or writing language. All the search engines are smart enough to track whether you are manipulating or spamming to rank higher. If you use too many keywords and repeat the same pattern over and over again they Search engines will not rank your title.
The keyword must be front-loaded in the title. A title can have one or two keywords in that. One is primary and the other is the secondary keyword. Using more than two keywords in the title marks it as a keyword spammy title and hence can’t rank for a specific query in search engine.
The primary keyword will be the keyword for which you want to rank for and the secondary keyword may consists of the brand name or the location name.
How to write an optimal title tag?
You need to write an optimal title to stand out from the competition on the search engine result page. Here are my six key points of writing an optimal title tag.
1. Choose a primary targeting keyword
The first best practice of writing a title tag is to come up with a targeting keyword. Your targeting keyword should be the base keyword. Here is my process for choosing a primary targeting keyword for a webpage
- Choose a topic to create a webpage about
- Go to the Google keyword planner
- Check for the keywords and the other related keywords
- Look at the stats and choose the keyword with lower or moderate competition with higher search volumes.
- If you find more than one such keywords, then compare and choose the best performing one.
Examples of primary keywords are “title tag” and puma shoes.
2. Look for long-tail variation of your primary keyword
The second step for choosing the title keywords is to look for the long-tail variations of the primary keyword, which you have chosen using Google keyword planner in the previous step. Long-tail variation keyword allows you to target the specific search intent audience.
For example, our primary targeting keyword is “title tag”, and you choose to “write optimal title tag” as the long-tail variation of your primary keyword. Then you can target the audience, which is looking specifically for writing an example of a title tag.
For choosing the long-tail variation of primary keyword, you can either select from answer the public or Google’s LSI keywords. Process for choose long-tail variation of primary keyword
- Search for a query in the google search engine
- Reach at the very bottom of the page
- Here you find the LSI keywords related to your primary keywords
- Choose out of them as per your requirements and again check the search volume and competition using google keyword planner or any other tool.
3. Draft your basic title tag
Now it’s time to draft your basic title tag. When you find out the best suited long-tail variation for your primary keyword, it’s time to write a basic title tag.
For example, my primary keyword was title tag and write optimal title tag is the long-tail variation of the keyword. Now I will try to form out some sentences out of that I will choose the sentence or title which looks authentic to my topic.
4. Look at what is unique about your content
The title tag you have draft need to be unique. Unique title tags have more chances to rank higher than a duplicated title tag. Google algorithmic updates also outranking the duplicated content.
For checking the uniqueness of your title either type you title in the google search bar or use any online plagiarism detection tool.
5. Take advantage of your brand
Here a thing comes into play that is branding. If you have good brand visibility, then you should use your brand name at the end of the title tag. Even if you don’t have good brand visibility, then you should use your brand name with a purpose to improve your brand visibility online. Your brand name should be easily memorable and unique.
6. Write for your customers
You may have heard about the famous quote in digital marketing. Write for the customer, not for Search engine
If others like you google will also like you.
These quotes are based on the customer interest-based content marketing.
If you write a title tag by keeping the customer needs in your mind, then you can come up with a title that will fit the customer needs.
Example of clickable titles
There are various advantages of driving clicks to your webpages. As it drive traffic to your website also improves your search engine rankings.

Here are some tips from the Ahrefs blog that will improve the CTR rate of your title.
1. Add emotion to the title
The use of power words tap into people’s emotions. Using such words into title tags can do wonders for CTR.
Tips, Tricks, Free, Remarkable, etc. are such powerful words.
Here are two questions you have to answer whenever you use power words in title tags.
What does your content offer that’s unique?
What pain points do people searching for this query have?
2. Add brackets and parentheses
I used brackets/parentheses to improve the readability of the title. For example, How to Improve Domain Authority? [10 Days Cycle].
Parentheses can also help improve click-through rates (CTR).
3. Use curiosity gap to entice the click
The curiosity gap is the space between what we know and what we want or even need to know.Joanna Wiebe
It’s the basic technique used in copywriting to entice clicks.
I have seen such titles on the UC browser news. 90% of the UC news titles create the curiosity gap.
You have to be careful with this technique because your rankings may go down through the clickbait route.
If you use this technique in writing title tags, then your webpage content needs to be related to the title and will fill the curiosity gap. Otherwise, the visitor will bounce back from your website, and your ranking will get harmed.
4. Front-load your keyword
Put your primary targeting keyword at the beginning of the title tag. Here are some reasons that describe the benefits of front-loading your keyword:
- It catches the attention of the visitor.
- It could be a ranking factor.
- It can result in more keyword-rich links.
Common Mistakes made with the title writing
Title is the first segment or element of your website that entices the clicks. So writing a clickable title tag is the primary requirement of the webpage. Before writing a title tag, you should avoid these common mistakes done when writing a title.
1. Duplicate Title Tag
It isn’t a one time process that you create one time and use it all over the website or recycle it on nearly similar web pages. Duplicate title tag is the common mistake done by the non-SEO persons.
How to fix Duplicate title tags?
Every webpage should have a unique title based on the content of that webpage. You can check for duplicate title tags using Ubersuggest, Google search console, or Screaming frog tools.
2. Title Length is Too Short
Search engine’s are not encyclopedia or a product catalog websites that can rank your short length title’s webpages like “Classic 350”. Your title needs to be of good length like “Royal Enfield Classic 350 With Price in India”.
How to fix short length title tags?
Add enough information to your title tag so that it indicates the content of the webpage.
Bonus tip: Title tag with 50-60 characters has higher chances to get clicked.
3. Title is too long
There is no specified length for the title tag, but the title tags more than 65 characters get truncated by the most search engines. They possibly lose their meaning by truncation.
How to fix long length title tags?
If you are using WordPress, then use SEO plugins like Yoast SEO, All in one SEO. These plugins will show you length alerts when writing title tags. You can also use SERP simulator tools to check whether your title tag fits in the 65 characters limit.
4. Over-optimized title tag
SEO beginners over-optimized the title tags most of the time. They either keyword stuff or used unnatural flow for writing title tags. An example of an over-optimized title is Samsung phone, Best Android Phone, Samsung Galaxy.
How to fix an over-optimized title tag?
Write a title tag with one primary keyword or use a long-tail variation of that primary keyword. And try to write the title with natural flow. For example, Best Samsung Galaxy Android Smartphone With Price.
5. Using inappropriate Abbreviations
“Digi. Marketing Ag. in India” or similar shorter words are the bad you can do writing with the title tag. Abbreviations are good, but search engines can’t read those terms correctly.
How to fix inappropriate abbreviations in the title tag?
Use full-length words and there are some predefined abbreviations that I recommend using such as USA, SEO, PPC, etc.
6. No value addition to title tag
Content should be user-oriented, written for real users, not for bots. Wisely choose the title for your webpages that will make user to visit your website. “Buy New Home in India” is an example of a spammy title.
How to fix?
The title should be informative and be an ideal mixture of primary keyword, CTA factor, and short information. Check Google result for getting inspiration to write a value-added title tag.
7. Targeting keyword is not at Beginning
Targeted keywords should be used upfront of the webpage title.
How to fix?
Try to use the targeted keyword at the beginning of the title, but not for the price of being grammatically or semantically incorrect.
8. Clickbait in Title
It is important to attract visitors to your websites, but you need to be honest with your customers. Curiosity gap and eye-catching titles doesn’t mean that you can put anything that doesn’t relate to your content.
Earlier it was a good practice to use such techniques to get website visits. But those days are long gone these tactics doesn’t work anymore.
Example of a clickbait title: What happens next when this girl hugs a homeless person
How to fix click-bait in title tag?
Write the actual title tag which relates to your webpage content.
9. Not using natural language in title tags
Most of the business uses unnatural languages in title tags. They either put main keywords with some other keywords with any meaning. For example: “Under $99 Puma Shoes | Latest Edition”.
This type of title does rank now as they have an unnatural flow of language.
How to fix?
Try to use natural language instead of keywords stuffing. For the above example, natural language will be “Latest Edition of Puma Shoes Under $99”.
Why won’t Google use my title tag?
If you spend hours upon hours in optimizing your titles until you think they are perfect, and then Google decided to pick another title for the query. You will get in a panic. 2. Your Title Doesn’t Match The Query
If your webpage content matches the query asked in Search engine but doesn’t presented well in the title, then google will rewrite your display title. It’s not a bad thing that your title is being rewritten but you should consider improving it to match with the search keyword and their intent.
3. You Have An Alternative Title
In some case when you provide additional meta title tags for Facebook and Twitter, Google may choose either of those title tags according to the necessity. But if this creates an undesirable display title, then you might want to rewrite the alternative data.
